The ongoing misconceptions about Provocative Therapy

I used to spend hours talking to Frank Farrelly about his Provocative Therapy approach and especially about the misconceptions about this approach. Twenty years on, I am faced with exactly the same questions.

Common questions include

“Is Provocative Therapy aggressive”

“What happens if…?” (endless examples about imaginary situations that may occur)

“How do I get to be a Provocative Therapy Trainer?” (Often the person has no experience in this modality”

I fully appreciate that Provocative Therapy is very different to other approaches and I am keen to maintain the quality and spirit of Frank Farrelly’s work

Getting beyond digital, logical sequences

Many people struggle with the multi layered aspect of this approach and try to reduce everything into sequences. NLP folks in particular can’t help themselves and over the years I’ve had to explain in detail that PT is not rolling out a series of pre planned techniques, but instead you have to pay attention to what is happening in “the here and now”

NLP was invaluable in helping ,me deconstruct Frank’s work, but both Provocative Therapy and my own evolved Provocative Change Works model are greatly more advanced than most talk therapy approaches. I set up a certification platform for PCW and now teach a rolling one year training that includes a lot of Frank’s original work

One thing is certain, Frank was massively ahead of the curve and I continue to be fascinated by the endless possibilities that can be found through this approach. The interest in Provocative Therapy and Provocative Change Works continues to increase and I now have a growing group of students from all over the globe, many running their own clinics
